15 Greatest Queen Songs Of All Time
15. The March Of The Black Queen
From: Queen II (1974)
The most obscure track on this list, “The March of the Black Queen” was released on the band’s second album, never released as a single (the only track from that album released as a single being “Seven Seas of Rhye”), and was rarely performed live. It’s also the only track from either of their first two albums to make the cut here. That’s not to say their first two efforts were bad, because they’re not, but none have really become true classics like singles from Sheer Heart Attack onwards.
That said, “The March of the Black Queen” is a curiosity beloved by hardcore fans of the band because of its complex structure in the same vein as “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and serves as a precursor of sorts (which was suggested by Brian May himself). Like that track, it has no chorus and features a heavy dose of vocal harmony between the band’s members, but the pacing is much faster, and it’s slightly longer.
It’s not one of the most recognizable songs the band has recorded, but it’s a hidden gem that every Queen fan should give a listen or two…or 50.
