There is a lot of dark material on Nebraska, Springsteen's stripped-down post-River ode to the blue collard guys, criminals and outcasts of Reagan's America. The album could have been even darker, had Springsteen opted to include Child Bride, about a man who takes an underage girl to Florida. Parts of Child Bride would evolve and morph into Working on the Highway, which does appear on Nebraska. But this is clearly the superior version and really deserves more recognition.
