Speaking of James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem, there's no doubt that the man is a purveyor of sonic landscapes that simply need to be played at maximum volume to be appreciated. The man slings catchy, funky dance-floor breakdowns like it's his job (which, often, it is), but his finest tracks and his most stunning displays of production are actually his ballads. One of his best is "All I Want," the centerpiece number from LCD's 2010 swansong "This Is Happening," which cribs moves from David Bowie's "Heroes" and parlays them into a long, meandering sonic trip that doubles down on slide guitars and blipping synth lines. By the end of the song, Murphy's vocals have nearly been overwhelmed by the out-of-control synthesizers, and the swell of sound and confusion that results is something that has to be heard on the loudest of soundsystems.
