On Fire Arriving at a time when Hard Rock and Heavy Metal needed a kick up the backside as it crumpled under the steel-toe-capped might of Punk's onslaught, Van Halen emerged, dazzlingly like Gods of the Sun from the Sunset Strip. Containing many of Van Halen's signature songs, including "Runnin' with the Devil", "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love", "Jamie's Cryin'", the untouchable guitar solo "Eruption" and a crackling revamp of The Kinks classic "You Really Got Me", here was a band who didn't care about trends and prevailing fashions, they simply wanted to party and rock hard, and they had no shame in doing it. They were a breath of fresh air amidst Punk's smog of overwhelming self-importance and they bought some much needed fun back to music. Fortunately they had in their ranks the most exciting new guitarist in the world too. Eddie Van Halen was astonishing, innovative and without peer. The precocious little scamp practically pioneered two-handed tapping, incorporating natural and artificial harmonics and tremolo picking which resulted in exquisite technique expertly balanced with an innate rhythmic sensibility. Basically, he had mad skills and could have produced pretentious material like someone like Yngwie Malsteem, but instead chose to write actual songs - real Rock songs you could bang your head to.
