17. The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

'Ebeneezer Goode', by British electronica/dance group The Shamen, was released in September 1992 and quickly became one of the more controversial UK number-one hits of the decade. Utilising none too subtle references to recreational drug use, the chorus infamously sang 'Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode, He's Ebeneezer Goode' (the analogy to Ecstasy, not particularly well disguised, incurred the wrath of the BBC who initially banned it from broadcast). 'Ebeneezer Goode' entered the British charts at number six before reaching the heady heights of number one just two weeks later, ironically during the BBC's drug awareness week. Perfect timing!
