19. 30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill

30 Seconds To Mars, the musical endeavour of Oscar winning actor Jared Leto seemed to explode from nowhere with their breakthrough single, The Kill. The song itself is a fairly standard post-Emo breakup song full of tawdry clichés and ham-fisted lyrics, wrapped up in production so glossy it's almost like they ran the song through a bottle of Pledge before committing it to disc. Combined with the overwrought homage to The Shining in the music video, the song instantly got a lot of peoples' backs up (save for the fangirls who instantly adored Leto). Underneath the song however, is a complicated and intricate musical backdrop full of melodious guitar lines, jazz infused chords and even some attempts at dynamic shifts in volume and power, which is a rare thing in modern music.
