50 Rock And Metal Albums You Need To Hear Before You Die

By Michael Downie /

17. Hammerfall - Crimson Thunder

If you like your metal cheesy and with its tongue firmly within it's cheek, then Crimson Thunder is the album for you, as the Finnish power metal titans brought out a collection of songs that are the musical equivalent of a wheel of stilton. With songs like The Unforgiving Blade, Riders Of The Storm and the amazing lead single Hearts On Fire, you'll be singing along within a couple of listens and you won't care how ridiculous the songs are, simply because they are so much fun. Who said metal had to take itself seriously?

16. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

When it comes to Black Sabbath, everyone knows Paranoid, Iron Man and War Pigs but fewer people are aware of what can be found on their superb debut album. Largely known as the first proper heavy metal album (or at least the first album to define heavy metal is we know it today), Ozzy and his not-so-merry-men caused a shockwave in the British music scene with it's release and even managed to chart at 8th place in the UK album charts. Black Sabbath featured the single Evil Woman as well as the live staples and fan favourites Black Sabbath, N.I.B and The Wizard.

15. Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?

Megadeth's second album, Peace Sells is widely regarded to be their best and is a defining album of the 1980s thrash movement. It was released just as bands like Metallica and Slayer were getting mainstream interest and more extreme music was becoming more acceptable on the likes of MTV. The title track and lead single was a massive hit around the world and has remained in Megadeth's live shows for nearly 30 years now. Peace Sells... has Megadeth at their belligerent best and its appeal has not only endured, but grown as Megadeth's career has continued.
