Florence Welch: Her 10 Best Songs

By Ed Nash /

7. Drumming Song

Coming back to the Morrissey comparison, just like the Bard of Salford Florence also has the ability to articulate everyday universal feelings of insecurity and doubt and "Drumming Song" does just that. It's also a tale of lust and obsession, the feeling you get when you can't stop thinking about someone and how nervous and excited you are in their presence. This is sexual tension brought alive in words and music. It's an incredibly sensual song, and you can hear the tension between Florence and her object of desire crackle across the dance floor in the words "As I move my feet towards your body, I can hear this beat, it fills my head up and gets louder and louder". Also, let's not forget one of her greatest strengths that often gets overlooked - her voice. On record when she multi-tracks her vocals it sounds immense, but in a live setting it's equally as devastating. The version of the song here is a live session from Abbey Road and 2 minutes and 36 seconds in is a goose bump moment - where she draws her breath to unleash an unearthly, primal scream that blows the roof off the place.
