These days the festive period for music fans means the choice between the X Factor winner and one of the piss-poor reality TV Christmas covers that flood the market in the few weeks before the big day on December 25th. No matter how you feel about the festive period itself, and not wanting to sound like a shameless nostalgic, there's just not the same quality of music as their used to be. Seriously, where the hell have all the good Christmas songs gone?! Anyway, the past couple of years have seen a new development in the music market, as those adverse to the effects of saccharine, poor-quality Christmas pop garbage choose instead to download a classic, usually anti-festive song to push towards the hallowed turf of Christmas number one. This year it's Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and while my download will probably go to the Wombles' rerelease of "Wombling Merry Christmas" I would love to see a counter-cultural choice for the Christmas Album Number One. And what better than the upcoming release of Punk Goes Pop Vol 4, which as usual brings some grubby punk to the world of sugary sweet pop. This year's edition also features one of my favourite covers of the last 12 months from Atlanta, Georgia rockers Woe, Is Me, which can be seen below. http://youtu.be/07-YCv1tLRg Who'd have thought something so harmless could sound so delightfully aggressive? Punk Goes Pop Volume 4 is released in the UK on 21st November, 2011, and you can expect a review from yours truly - considering my love of the album series, it'd be impossible to resist, especially now that I know the track-list: The Ready Set - Roll Up, Wiz Khalifa Allstar Weekend - Yeah 3x, Chris Brown Go Radio - Rolling In The Deep, Adele I See Stars - Till The World Ends, Britney Spears Pierce The Veil - Just The Way You Are, Bruno Mars Sleeping With Sirens - F*** You, Cee Lo Green A Skylit Drive - Love The Way You Lie, Eminem, feat. Rihanna Silverstein - Runaway, Kanye West Woe, Is Me - Last Friday Night (TGIF), Katy Perry Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! - We R Who We R, Ke$ha Tonight Alive - Little Lion Man, Mumford & Sons The Downtown Fiction - Super Bass, Nicki Minaj For All Those Sleeping - You Belong With Me, Taylor Swift Tell me that doesn't sound incredible! You can pre-order the album here.
