Legendary Grunge band Nirvana are to get back together for one night only tonight, and will be fronted by former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. Hardly renown for his long crop of tangled blonde hair, sweatshirts and torn jeans, the news will stun hardcore Nirvana fans, who still worship lead singer Kurt Cobain eighteen years after his death. The 70 year old rocker will perform a "new song" with the pair tonight at 121212, the Hurricane Sandy Charity Concert in New York. The Rolling Stones are also billed to perform. McCartney has been secretly working in the studio with Grohl and Novaselic on an unknown song, after receiving a phone call from the Foo Fighters frontman to "come and jam with some mates". Details of the set are being kept as a surprise, whilst McCartney revealed he received a surprise of his own. "I didnt really know who they were," confessed the Yellow Submarine singer. "They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said Whoa? You guys havent played together for all that time?
"And somebody whispered to me Thats Nirvana. Youre Kurt. I couldnt believe it."
Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994 aged 27, and Nirvana dissolved in the immediate aftermath. The band released three platinum-selling albums in their career, Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero. Released in 1991, Nevermind would catapult the band into wild commercial success, and yanked Michael Jackson's album Dangerous off the top of the Billboard Charts. Containing hit songs such as "Come As You Are" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit", it is widely considered one of the best albums of the 1990's and one of the best rock albums of all time. What do you make of this? Is it a mistake on Grohl's part, or a decent idea? Let us know in the comment section below.
