The Kinks: Their 10 Greatest Songs

By Christopher Jennings /

9. Big Sky

Taken from the album: The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (1968) "Big Sky" can be found on Side 1 of The Kinks extraordinary concept album The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society and is the only song on this list not to have been released as a single. Virtually spoken by Ray Davies, the majority of the lyrics to "Big Sky" address mans insignificance in the vastness of the universe and the reality that our lives and problems mean absolutely nothing in the bigger picture, under the 'big sky'. As with the majority of The Kinks songs recorded during the 60's this song is melodic, sensual, beautifully executed, fiendishly catchy and performed to absolute perfection and remains a fine example of Ray Davies sociological observations of English people and their way of life.
