The Mercury Prize: Who Got Snubbed?

By Gavin Critchley /

TesseracT €“ Altered State

I'm going to kick start the list with the album I knew would get snubbed immediately, but above all deserved a nomination for everything it has achieved. When it comes to diversity in genres, styles, soundscapes and pushing music into fresh and dynamic directions, this album is everything you could possibly look for. Blending aspects of Ambience, Djent, Prog, Jazz, Post-Rock, Funk, Electronica, Metal. It is truly mind boggling how quickly some of the songs can transport you from one sequence to the other in a single movement. Though the "Of Matter" sequence for me is a tour de force of song writing prowess, I would point to the song "Of Energy €“ Singularity" as a prime display of the bands variant soundscape. The song kicks of heavy, smoothly flowing into what could be mistaken for a Michael Jackson groove, traversing into an ambient vocal display of elegance and then straight back into what I would say is the bands signature sound, and that's just the first 3 minutes of the 8 minute song. I could go on all day about this album, but it really needs to be heard to be believed, bringing in a new vocalist was always going to be a challenge for the band after a hugely successful debut effort, but they have in turn created a new sound that they almost seem born for.
