I can't think of a sporting event where this song hasn't been used to some description. The song was written by Brian May for the band's 1977 album 'News of the World' as an accompaniment to 'We Are The Champions' and features aside from the 30 second guitar solo by May at the end mostly hand-stamps and foot-claps from the band. The video for the song was never actually meant to be recorded, with the group using the grounds of Roger Taylor's new house to record 'Spread Your Wings' from the same album. After the video had finished one of the crew realised that they had locked themselves out of the house and had to go to the estate agent's in order to retrieve the keys. As the band huddled inside a minivan drinking whiskey to fend off the cold they had the idea to record a short promo for 'We Will Rock You'. A fast version of the song was played live by the band in the early 80's on select European and North American dates. The fast version was officially recorded on the John Peel show but was allegedly created to begin concerts as Mercury had spoken of his frustration about the lack of audience participation and enthusiasm at shows. In fact, during the 'Live Montreal' CD, you can hear Mercury clearly expressing frustration at the crowds lack of dancing during their performance of the Elvis Presley cover 'Jailhouse Rock'.
