8. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836-1908)

Who Was He: Prime Minister of Great Britain (1905-08) and Leader of the Liberal Party (1899-1908). Career Highlights: He led the Liberals to a landslide victory in the 1906 election, ending years of Conservative dominance. While in office he oversaw the introduction of old age pensions for over-70s, free school meals, restrictions on child labour and the relaxation of rules around trade union strikes. In essence, his government laid the long-term foundations of Britain€™s welfare state. Context of Last Words: After 1907 Campbell-Bannerman suffered a series of heart attacks, forcing him to resign as Prime Minister on April 3rd 1908. He died 19 days later, becoming the only Prime Minister to die within the walls of 10 Downing Street. Last Words: €œThis is not the end of me.€
