10 Genes Named After Fantasy Icons

10. Sonic Hedgehog

Yep, believe it or not, we've all got a little bit of Sonic Hedgehog in us. Here we have a protein named after the character, Sonic the Hedgehog, who was Sega's answer to Nintendo's Mario in the console wars of the 1980s. This particular protein regulates the growth of digits on limbs and the organization of the brain. However, helpful as it may be, there has been some controversy surrounding the lighthearted name of the protein. Some scientists claim that the name is much too frivolous to be taken seriously and may cause some offense, especially when parents have to explain to their children that they have a mutation in their 'sonic hedgehog'.
