Literally. She figures he's probably a ghost (not that uncommon round her parts) but eventually it's revealed that she is the ghost and, hey, wait a minute, this came out before The Sixth Sense. Explain yourself, Shyamalan. Readers got the double-whammy of regular ghost-fear and existential "AM I EVEN ALIVE?" fear. Why It'll Scare You Now: Ew, who makes friends with their neighbours? They might start "just dropping by" *shivers*.
