7. Smuggling POW Camp Escape Tools In With Monopoly
Mainly known for tearing families apart on social gatherings, Monopoly is actually a much more interesting game than people gave it credit for. The classic board game was originally developed as a warning against monopolies, it's been in existence since the late 19th century, and copies were used to smuggle escape tools into POW camps. Prisoners Of War are remembered for daring escapes of the sort seen in, well, The Great Escape.
However, the reality was slightly less Hollywood but no less exciting. After suffering from rationing of resources, the producers of the Monopoly board game suddenly found themselves funded by the British government. Because the games were so well known, they were allowed to pass through strict German security during the Second World War, meaning that they missed the various escape tools and the cloth map of the prisoner's surrounding area that were concealed amongst the pieces, fake money and board.
There's no word if anybody actually escaped with it, but...
