9. The Capture Of Scraggy

It could be argued that the Gurkhas truly came to prominence - at least in British popular culture - as a result of their many spectacular feats in battle during the Second World War. One such feat in particular that stands out is their capture of a hill named 'Scraggy' from the Japanese towards the end of the war in 1944.

The Gurkhas were instrumental in the capture of this tactical location during the British breakout from the Imphal Plain, taking on Japanese fighters who were hardly known for their cowardice or inability to fight.

The battalion fought a number of skirmishes on the hill, capturing areas and then defending against further attacks. By June of 1944 they had managed to take possession of the lower slopes, eventually moving on to capture the rest of the hill on July 24th of the same year.

Along the way the battalion is believed to have left hundreds of enemies dead despite fighting from a weaker position against the fortified Japanese.

In doing so they broke the spirit of one of the strongest fighting forces in the world at that time and were lauded for their bravery in difficult conditions.
