Boston Dynamics are responsible for a lot of the developments in robot technology and ATLAS is currently one of the most sophisticated.
It is designed for search and rescue purposes, so negotiating rough terrain is a must. Keep in mind ASIMO's tendency to fall down stairs if they're just a bit too high, watching ATLAS shamble about the forest or over piles of rubble gives you an idea of just how difficult these movements are for a robot.
As well as its incredible ability to balance even as researches swing mini wrecking balls into it (watch enough robotics videos and you'll see that they do that a lot), the most advanced model has completely articulated hands and an impressive array of sensors, including laser rangefinders.
A demonstration of ATLAS's abilities led one researcher to remark that "A new species, Robo Sapiens, are emerging".
Well, if nothing else, the future robot super-race will now have something to put on their banners.
