Throughout history castles have been used as defensive posts to guard strategically important landmasses, trade routes and cities. Used as bastions, prisons and royal residences, many people have traversed the halls of castles that still remain standing, and those people have left behind their energy, legends and in some cases, their corpses. From Germany to Ghana, castles have been erected for various reasons at various times in history. As monarchies dwindled and beliefs changed, many castles became museums, private rental facilities or some other tourist trap, which is probably still better than when the dungeons were in use. With these new uses came new stories from visitors, employees and workers. Stories are told about voices and shadowy figures. Stories are whispered about the victims tortured to death or the soldiers that still patrol the watchtowers. Many of these castles have appeared on television shows where people do stupid things for money. That aside, each of these castles has an interesting and frightening history that lingers just below the opulent fascia and looming spires of its exterior. In celebration of this spooky month of October, lets explore the most bloodied, plagued and haunted castles in the world. Just watch your neckĀ
