10 Sure-Fire Ways To Screw Up Your CV And Alienate Employers

By Matthew Murray /

1. Making It Generic

This is seriously important. Tailor your CV. Don't think that a generic run down of your working life will suffice. First of all, if you've changed careers at any point then a lot of stuff from your previous career will be completely irrelevant and should only be referenced minimally (so that there isn't a blank spot in your working history). Focus on the relevant stuff and re-write your CV to direct every point back to the job you are applying for. Don't expect the employer to connect the dots €“ do it yourself! If you achieved something massive in a completely different job; specify the skills it demonstrates and why they would be useful for the job you want now. A generic CV won't tell an employer much. If someone else is competing for the job with a CV that targets everything back to the job they are applying for, they will have the employer's attention. Well, that's what we at WhatCulture think constitutes a great CV. Is there anything we missed? Hit us up in the comments with your opinions on the matter.
