2. The Mature Student

They have had a previous career and experience galore, and they will have no trouble in telling you the story of their life (particularly if you are doing a History degree). They will be amongst the keenest students in the class. You€™d be surprised how relatable they can be though... after all you are all in this confusing place together, and nobody really knows what is going on in Fresher€™s Week. While they will not be able to take advantage of all of the social aspects of university, they are bound to be a crucial part of some form of group work at some point during your degree. It€™s worth remembering that although you there may be quite a sizable age gap, the fact that you are on the same course at the same time gives you the important commonality which is necessary for a friendship. As previously noted, your friendship group following Fresher€™s Week will be incredibly diverse. Making friends with someone who is older than you is an excellent way to broaden your horizons, so don€™t think of them as better than you because they are older... remember, this isn€™t secondary school.
