Consider Childrey: the name contains "child" but, confusingly, that section isn't said as "child". Because - surprise! - that's not where the break between syllables occurs. In actuality, this village near Wantage is called "Chill-dree". How did our plucky volunteer do? Unfortunately, she assumed British English made some sort of sense again and said "Child-rey". Exactly how many British people would get that one right either is a mystery.
