8. Female Trout Fake Orgasms

Look, it happens. Sometimes you're just not feeling it.

Scientists from Sweden's National Board of Fisheries have discovered that female trout regularly fake orgasms to trick the males into thinking they had released their eggs.

This apparently isn't about saving boy-trout's pride, the lady trout don't light up a cigarette afterwards and say things like "you did great there, champ". According to the experts, the subterfuge is an insurance policy.

Usually, trout will release their eggs and sperm at the same time for fertilisation, but when a female trout fakes it, she is essentially "saving" that trout's sperm. If she is then approached by a superior male, she'll spawn with him instead, if not, then she always has a back up option.
