11 Craziest Things About Living In Space

5. They Turn Into Superman...

The human body evolved on earth, under the influence of earth's gravity, so when you take it out of that environment, some pretty odd things begin to happen.

Due to the lack of gravity applying pressure to the spine, most astronauts will gain up to 6cm in height. This is due to the squishy bit between the vertebrae becoming un-squished (that's the technical term) and is the same reason why you are generally a little bit taller in the mornings, but on a bigger scale.

Another effect of living in zero gravity is that everything that was previously weighed down to the bottom of your body begins to make its way to the top. Because it usually takes quite a bit of force to pump the fluids in your legs back up to the heart, the muscles that do this are pretty strong. Remove the gravity and all of the fluids are pushed into the upper torso and head, creating an effect that NASA calls "chicken legs".

The internal organs also shift up into the chest cavity, reducing waist size and creating a barrel chest. All of these effects together produce a sort of Superman physique, complete with the ability to "fly" (maybe that's why Superman looks like that in the first place).
