Throughout the political conflict, both channels gave impartial and neutral reporting of the Troubles. Their journalists frequently put themselves at risk of harm. UTV is the only independent ITV station. Whilst Carlton and Granada were gobbling up franchises, UTV stood alone and thus retains a strong local feel in Northern Ireland that is missing in other parts of the UK. Putting on UTV is like putting on a cherished friend.
