5. Only Seven People Attended Poe's Original Funeral In 1849... Although He Was Given A Proper Ceremony 160 Years Later

Poe died on October 7, 1849, and he was hastily buried the following day by his cousins - meaning there were just seven people present at the original funeral. So rushed was the ceremony in fact that Poe was originally given an unmarked grave at his grandfather's plot in the Westminster Burying Grounds in Baltimore, before money was raised to give him a proper monument. In 2009, some 160 years after he died, Poe was finally given a proper funeral when thousands of fans from around the world visited a ceremony in Baltimore to commemorate his life.
