Mandela's humble upbringing in a tribal village in Mvezo in the Cape Province of South Africa ensured that his tastes remained very grounded, even once he became President. Tripe may not appeal to the majority of people - what with it being the stomach lining from farm animals and it being a quite-unpalatable texture - but Mandela loved the stuff, and he would regularly have it for his birthday meals, even when in office.
