Labour's gay MP Leo Abse regularly introduced bills into the House of Commons attempting to decriminalise homosexuality in the 1960s - and this was something Thatcher supported, despite the fact most Conservatives did not. Thatcher also voted in favour of Liberal David Steel's Private Member's Bill, the Abortion Act 1967, which legalised abortion up to 28 weeks' gestation. This shows that Thatcher had some liberal policies many of her critics would find difficult to accept - mind, on saying that, so would some of her supporters on the far right!
