Have you ever been somewhere and you suddenly smell something which causes a flood of memories and nostalgia? Has the smell of cooking, or even petrol at a fuel station reminded you of your childhood (don't judge me, each to their own)? Of course you have, but have you ever questioned why this happens? Why certain smells take you back to a certain time of your life? Well sniff up and smell the answer. The reason smell has this impact and can put us in a good mood is because certain nerves in our nose send information to a section of our brain called the olfactory cortex, which belong to something called the 'emotional brain.' This instantly goes to work when a smell enters our nose and thus it can can evoke memories and emotions almost immediately. Conditioned responses also trigger memories, say, when you first smell a scent you link it to an event, person or object and so when you smell it again the link is already there and hence the nostalgia and mood. This is also a reason why we all prefer different smells, like petrol, for instance. Seriously, stop judging, I had a good childhood.
11. Why is Belly Button Fluff Always Blue?
You're sitting on the couch watching TV in your underwear, suddenly something catches your eye, it's a big tuft of blue fluff in your belly button. Is something trying to bury its way in there? Oh my god, what is it? It's a little fluff creature, isn't it? Is it a blue spider? Am I going to die? Settle down, it's just a bit of lint from your clothes, we've all had to pick it out of our bellies one time or another. And we know what you're going to say. 'but I haven't been wearing blue today.' We know, we were all admiring your shirt earlier, very nice. Anyway, that doesn't matter, the fluff will still likely be blue. See, the reason being is that the fibres from your clothes move downwards because of that gravity thing and then collect in your navel where it gets stuck, especially if it's an inny. But yes, you said, you're not wearing blue. but most clothes, especially darker items are actually made up of blue dyes or pigments, despite not actually being blue themselves, so even though you don't think you're wearing blue you actually are. Science! Now, don't be disgusting, put your belly away.
