After graduating from Duke University School of Law, North Carolina, as third in his class Nixon hoped to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation - and even sent in a letter of application. Nixon received no response to his letter, however - and only found out decades later that he had come within a whisker of being offered a position before last-minute budget cuts meant the potential role was culled.
