It is predicted that by the year 2116, the human race will have reached a Type I designation on the Kardashev Scale. This means that we will have harnessed every planetary source of energy including nuclear, renewable and anti-matter based sources.

Type I civilisations can also control weather systems and natural disasters and will have completely abandoned inefficient, limited fossil fuels.

Type I is the first step in becoming a proper "grown up" civilisation with universal global government and enough of an energy surplus to make off-world activities not only feasible, but commonplace.

2. Terraforming On Mars Begins

Depending on whether any life has already be found on the Martian surface by then, introducing extremophile life such as algae and bacteria would begin to oxygenate the atmosphere, making it fit for humans to breathe.

Terraforming a planet is possibly a multi-generational undertaking, and the early 22nd century would just be the beginning.
