7 Everyday Objects Hacked By Scientists

6. Gelatin: Recycled Into Clothes

Gelatin is the thing that makes jelly wobble and stops vegetarians from enjoying Jelly Babies, but very soon you could actually be wearing it. In an ever more eco-conscious society, in ever tougher economic times, scientists have been looking at ways to reduce waste and produce more sustainable products. So they made a yarn out of gelatin. The gelatin is a waste product from the meat production industry, formed from animal by-products such as the skin, cartilage, and bone marrow. It can be spun into threads and treated with chemicals to create a warm, strong yarn that can be made into clothes. This recycling not only uses up wasted by-products, but also reduces the environmental impact of the clothing industry. Would you wear gelatin clothes? It's not all that different from leather or naturally sourced dyes after all.
