7 Everyday Objects Hacked By Scientists

1. Glitter: Space Rainbow

Glitter: The essence of little girls and Bronies the world over, but now NASA have gotten in on the act. In a move that sounds like it was lifted straight out of the next Disney princess movie, scientists at NASA have developed something called the "Orbiting Rainbow", which is essentially a huge cloud of glitter released into space. Why? To look at the stars, of course. Most space telescopes require mirrors to work, but getting dirty great mirrors up into orbit is really complicated and expensive. So, instead of trying to haul a 400kg sheet of glass into space, NASA are planning to shoot the glitter cloud into orbit and then hold it in place with lasers. Awesome. The added benefit of this method is that the "glitter mirror" can actually be manipulated and shaped to adapt to whatever they want to look at. Shape-shifting glitter space mirror, what a time to be alive. Want to write for What Culture Science?
