If you're really keen to avoid life's little tragedies, a team of academics have actually come up with a formula that can predict the likelihood of an irritating mishap and how to avoid it.

The formula has five factors relating to any situation: urgency (U), complexity (C), importance (I), skill (S) and frequency (F) and Aggravation (A) with a value of 0.7 - to which you apply a score between one and nine, and calculate thusly: ((U+C+I) x (10-S))/20 x A x 1/(1-sin(F/10)).

Put all of this together and you get a score of between 1 and 10 that indicates how likely you are to fall victim to the Law of Sod. This could give you a handy heads-up to be more careful but, alternatively, it will probably just stress you out even more and make you much more likely to spill your drink down your shirt on the first date.

Still, it's nice you know you can at least have the illusion of control of these things.
