In the grand scheme of things, Dolores Claiborne is easily one of Stephen King's most accomplished and yet unfairly underrated masterpieces. A novel told as one rambling monologue from the titular character, it is at once a hard-boiled mystery, a meticulous character study, and a tightly-wound psychological thriller.

There are no chapters, no pauses - just Dolores, telling the story of an intriguing murder in captivating fashion. Some readers aren't too fond of the slow-burn nature of the plot, but to rank Dolores Claiborne any lower would be an insult to King's abilities as a storyteller.
