How To Escape From Alcatraz In 10 Easy Steps

3. Cross The San Francisco Bay

The final factor in leaving Alcatraz island was also the most dangerous. Crossing the freezing waters of the San Francisco Bay during the dead of night. This is also the last known location of the men and what happened to them after they launched their make-shift raft is a complete mystery. The official ruling by the prison was that the men had drowned in the bay. Two previous attempts to swim free from the island had both ended in drowning and the bodies of these would-be escapees had both been washed up on the shores. As neither the bodies of Morris and the Anglin brothers or their raft were ever found, the FBI operated its search and investigation on the assumption that the men had survived the crossing.

In the days following the case, a watertight packet of photographs was found floating in shallow water on one of the bays beaches. The photographs were all clearly labeled as being the property of the Anglin brothers. This piece of evidence is a confusing one as many people believed that no one would leave something of such sentimental value behind and presumed the men dead. On the other hand, the argument has been put forward that if you were a criminal who had just managed to escape from the United States top security prison this is exactly what you would want people to believe.
