Every Landing Party needs to be properly equipped. We have the mobile phone and a Tricorder is nearly with us. So the only equipment missing is a Phaser.
A video has been uploaded to YouTube showing what appears to be a homemade, working Original Series Phaser. It makes all the right sounds and fires a nice blue beam, but what makes it really exciting it that its powerful enough to pop a balloon.
Other people have made similar devices but this one looks the complete package.
The Phaser is your standard toy replica you can buy but the front light has been replaced with a laser module from a PlayStation Blu-ray disk drive. Once you add a little smoke, you can see the laser beam quite clearly. Also, the way it pops the balloon is a perfect example why its never a good idea to shine a laser into anybody's eye.
Blu-ray lasers have been used in the past to demonstrate that with a little modification, you can burn wood and paper quite easily. Its also no surprise that various governments around the world are experimenting with lasers as well as weapons that can literally microwave you. But for day to day use, it would make a great cigarette lighter.
