The development of a vaccine is too far away, but the authorities are working on the elimination of breeding grounds. Fumigation will also be carried out for concerned visitors and athletes. A high-tech approach to the outbreak could be in the works as scientists are working on breeding genetically modified sterile mosquitoes. When these GM mosquitoes are released into the environment, they can help to reduce numbers by as much as 90% by essentially "firing blanks" into the population. They're hoping that these measures will be enough to control the outbreak by the time the opening ceremony rolls around.
