Matt Serra stunned the MMA community and devastated half of Canada when, after winning a title shot through The Ultimate Fighter Season 4: The Comebacks, his right fist connected with Georges St-Pierres chin which rocked the champion and lead to the biggest upset in UFC championship history. Also resulting from the fourth season of TUF, Matt Serra became embroiled in one of the legendary rivalries of MMA with former-welterweight champion Matt Hughes. The rivalry shared between the two men led to their appointment as opposing coaches on the sixth season of TUF. True to the billing, the fighters were involved in a number of verbal spats during the show so anticipation was understandably high to see them finally throw down at UFC 79, December 2007. Not only would the fight see fan-favourite Serra throw down against legend Matt Hughes but we would also see a fight between two men who genuinely seemed to dislike one another. Regrettably, Serra was forced to withdraw complaining of a herniated disc in his lower back. We wouldnt see the Matts fight for nearly two years at UFC 98 where Hughes won by unanimous decision, in spite of being rocked with an inadvertent head-butt in the first round. Though we were treated to the touching scene of the two rivals embracing after the fight, there was a strong sense that the UFC had missed their best opportunity to exploit the feud at UFC 79.
