10 Controversies The UFC Wants You To Forget

8. Keith Hackney's Groin Shots

At UFC 4, the outlandish Joe Son was matched up against Keith Hackney who was known as "The Giant Killer". Hackney proceeded to take Son down and in a scramble Hackney proceeded to throw punches to Son's crotch. The match was actually stopped because of it and Hackney was proclaimed the winner. What is crazy about this match is that at the time what Hackney did was legal. It didn't help either that Son was wearing a speedo for the match. To say the least there were definitely very few rules at this time in the UFC and freak show matches were still very much a part of the promotion and the sport of MMA in general. While this is the definition of a "low blow" it was all a part of the no rules philosophy. Ultimately groin strikes were banned at UFC 14 and thankfully Son was wearing a cup. Hackney would face Royce Gracie in the next round and predictably lose. Joe Son would fight two more times in Japan and is now in jail for rape.
