The decision to replace captain Terry Butcher with Richard Gough was not one that was taken lightly. However, it was a move which worked out in the long run. Both players were similar, and Gough shared the same friendly and mannerly exterior as his English counterpart when interviewed. On the football pitch, he was also just as ferocious. Rangers fans react well to those players who they recognise as giving their all. Richard Gough was living proof that Gers supporters enjoy a blood and thunder style to their team. Whilst he was never the most immediately skillful, he was great in the air, and was definitely not scared to put himself in the way of danger to try and protect the goal. Alongside another tough customer, Andy Goram in goal, Gough helped create a fearsome back line for Rangers over a number of years. Older fans will remember with laughter the number of times the defender suffered a head knock, only to return sporting a bandage and continue playing the game. Similar injuries would force players to the treatment room in today's world, but Gough once joked that he would play on so long as his head was attached.
