10 Most Dramatic Late Winners In Domestic English Football
2. Sergio Aguero: Man City Vs QPR - 11/12
For years, that Michael Thomas goal was the ultimate last
minute, last-game, title-winning moment. However in 2012, he was usurped by
a certain sprightly Argentine as Manchester City delivered an unforgettable Premier League decider of their own.
It was all shaping up to be a classic “typical city” moment. All they had to do was beat struggling QPR at home on the final day and thanks to a superior goal difference, Manchester United's result at Sunderland would be utterly irrelevant. Naturally though, they found themselves reaching the 90 minute mark somehow losing 2-1 against a relegation threatened side who were down to 10 men. By the time five minutes of injury time was announced, some City fans had no doubt already given up, resigned instead to months of unbearable gloating from their United supporting mates.
In the 92nd minute however, a David Silva corner led to a Dzeko goal and suddenly the entire mood in the stadium changed. The Etihad crowd began to believe once more and frantically urged their team forward. Eventually, in the fourth minute of added time, Sergio Aguero exchanged a one-two with Mario Balotelli inside the QPR box and in a moment of footballing kismet that City fans can no doubt still recreate perfectly from memory, he rifled the ball home to wrestle the title back from the jaws of defeat.
Everything about that moment was sensational, the sound of the crowd, the sight of Joe Hart going mental down at the other end, the sight of grown adults losing it in the stands, even Martin Tyler's hysterical commentary somehow captured the mood perfectly. It’s the sort of drama that football throws up all too rarely, a breathtaking finale that saw Manchester City win their first ever Premier League title at the expense of their fiercest rivals.
