7. Ted MacDougall (£200,000)

For Bournemouth, Ted MacDougall is known as one of their greatest ever players - largely down to the fact that he bagged 103 goals in just 146 games for The Cherries.

When the Scottish striker moved to Manchester Untied, though, it was a different matter completely.

With manager Frank O'Farrell desperately trying to replace Denis Law, George Best and Bobby Charlton, United splashed a massive £200,000 on MacDougall in 1972.

And in case you're wondering, we're not being sarcastic here. Back then, £200,000 was major money; the British transfer record at the time being £225,000.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, this huge investment didn't pay off - MacDougall scoring just five goals in 18 games before new manager Tommy Doherty decided to let him move on to West Ham just six months after the forward was signed.
