The very nickname of this derby encounter says all you need to know about the brutality and violence it encapsulates.

Tragically, €œThe Holy War€ has claimed a number of lives over the years. In a city where even wearing the wrong colour or saying the wrong thing can lead to the most deadly of consequences, eight fans lost their lives between 2004 and 2006 when viewing this fixture.

Even the most prestigious of football firms refuse to travel to Krakow to support their team, branding €œThe City of Knives€ far too dangerous to enter. The most notorious incident in this derby came in 1990, when Polish police responded to clashes between the two sets of supporters with outrageously harsh and brutal treatment of the troublemakers.

The Cracovia fans reacted by counter-attacking the police, and, in an unexpected show of unison between the two rival camps, the Cracovia and Wisla fans joined forces in rounding on the police, an action which resulted in all-out brawl between both sets of fans and the Polish authorities.
