10 Past Rangers Signings That Seem Impossible Now

8. Andrei Kanchelskis

In the Summer of 1998, there was a rebuilding job necessary at Rangers. A lot of the top players for years were about to depart, and new faces were needed to fill the void. Enter Andrei Kanchelskis, a player longtime fans of Manchester United may remember. The winger spent 4 years at Old Trafford before moving to Everton in 1995. From there, he joined Serie A side Fiorentina. After 2 years in Italy, Rangers brought the Ukrainian-born attacking midfielder back to the UK. Signed to the tune of £5.5 million, that was considered a steal for such a dynamic, forward-thinking player. For many fans, the capture of Kanchelskis directly told them that the Gers were on the prowl, and capable of competing with the biggest sides in Europe. Whilst he wouldn't deliver that kind of trophy, the man was a success at Rangers. During a 4-year stay, he only managed 76 appearances, but it was during his first season that he shone most brightly. A lot of supporters likened Kanchelskis to prior favourite Brian Laudrup. £5.5 million is more than Rangers have spent in the past few seasons, as money has dried up. It's seems impossible that Rangers would be able to sign a player who was once a favourite at Man Utd in the current climate.
