10 Past Rangers Signings That Seem Impossible Now

6. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst

In similar fashion to Arthur Numan, Giovanni Va Bronckhorst was a Dutch international player who made headlines when he moved to Rangers in 1998. Signed for £5 million from Feyenoord, Giovanni instantly slotted into life at Ibrox, and all looked sunny in Govan. Rangers fans were excited to see what this new Dutch contingent could achieve, mainly on the European stage. After 3 years at Glasgow Rangers, Van Bronckhorst joined Arsenal. This proved what a great midfielder the Dutchman was, and he'd later play against 'The Gunners' for Barcelona in the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final. During his time at Rangers, the attack-minded central midfielder netted on 13 occasions, most memorably against Celtic and in Euro action against Monaco. Considering Ally McCoist chose to bring time wasters like Ian Black to Ibrox a few years ago, it shows how the rules have changed. Are the days gone when massive clubs like Rangers can expect to buy in talented players like Giovanni Van Bronckhorst? Players of his talent are much more likely to go for similar money to mid-table English Premier League sides.
