A large number of top players have left Tottenham Hotspur over the years. Sol Campbell, Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale spring to mind immediately - but those players had, in their minds, outgrown the club and effectively forced their way out. With that in mind, it was best to let them go, as their hearts were no longer with the Lilywhites and their enduring presence would only have disrupted the White Hart Lane dressing room. However, there have also obviously been players sold who weren't as vital to the team as most of the aforementioned superstars and who Spurs decided to sell off their own backs.
