A stern-faced, hard looking man, John Brown was never going to win any awards for being the most talented footballer on the planet. On many occasions, he wasn't even the most talented player in the Rangers first team, but he was crucial to the brand of football favoured by Walter Smith in the 90's. Summing Brown up, he was a workhorse of a defender. Football isn't just all about those players that can break down other teams, it's also about those who can stop the opposition from doing the same to them. Smith's Rangers were built from the back, and John Brown was a tremendous example of that. Walter Smith once remarked that he wished he could clone John Brown. That shows the high regard he was held in by club management. One of the first players on the training pitch each day, he was a reliable employee, and has shown how much Rangers means to him since hanging up his boots. Brown was very outspoken about Craig Whyte and Charles Green being in charge, and he has been proven right. Some Rangers fans didn't like his outspoken stance, but all respect his willingness to put himself in the firing line for the good of the institution.
