3. Steven Caulker

Despite the concept of signing an unglamorous defender who had yet to properly establish himself at a big club being seemingly right out of the Roy Hodgson playbook, it was actually current boss Jurgen Klopp who decided to bring Steven Caulker in on loan in 2016.

Unlike Hodgson though, Klopp decided that the best way to utilise Caulker's talents was to play him completely out of position as a makeshift forward, bringing him on in the final minutes of the game to be a nuisance to the opposition defence.

In the end, Caulker's time at Anfield amounted to just three league substitute appearances as an emergency striker, with Klopp presumably thinking his prolific international goalscoring record (one goal in his only England cap) would make him a valuable asset.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Caulker's loan deal with the Reds would not be extended, though he has since gone on to revitalise his career in Turkey with Alanyaspor.
